The Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) opened in 1997 with a goal of creating a unique after-school mathematics program. Our mission is to help all children build a solid foundation in math and logical reasoning, self-confidence, and a love of learning that will last throughout their lives.
Today, we are one of the oldest and most successful after-school programs in the United States. Our graduates have achieved impressive results in school, on standardized tests, in college and beyond. Families of our many students across the country trust their children's mathematical education to RSM. Our program has been featured on NPR, the Atlantic magazine, and our Director of Outreach has even appeared on TED. RSM has also been featured several times in the Boston Globe and appeared in the New York Times - because we are changing the approach and results of math education for America's children.
Why we're here - and why your child should join us
Public schools in the United States face an impossible challenge of teaching mathematics in diverse classrooms without any systematic curriculum. As the world grows flatter, even our best suburban schools continue to struggle when ranked on an international level.
We believe that mathematical minds can be built. Our systematic curriculum has been developed over a decade to help every child build a strong mathematics foundation. Emphasizing understanding over memorization, our program works to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.

What makes our math "Russian"?
The former Soviet Union invested heavily in the fields of science and mathematics developing unique curricula focused on cognitive development. These curricula were used as the basis for specialized Russian magnet schools and served as the basis for RSM's approach.
Research has shown that early math courses actually change the way a child's mind functions. Even a single year of mathematics has been shown to considerably change a child's approach to problem solving. Plus, our approach allows students to have fun in the classroom - no matter the difficulty of the problem.

Why choose a classroom environment over a one-on-one approach?
The classroom setting is a critical element of our approach. It helps us to create an intellectually challenging but friendly and supportive learning environment.
Research shows that group learning helps students learn more effectively, pointing specifically to optimal performance in groups of 8-12 individuals. 90% of our elementary classes fit in this range! We have seen first-hand, that students benefit considerably from working together. They learn best by collaborating, competing, and ultimately teaching each other rather than by receiving traditional math tutoring.
